There are plenty of fun things to do here in Rochester. But ever since freshman year, one of my favorite things to do is to attend First Fridays. My friends and I get together at the Arts Center, and either carpool or take the bus downtown to enjoy a night of art. Granted, most of us are art majors, but the great thing about First Fridays is that there is something there for everyone, even if you’re not artistically inclined yourself.

According to their website, “First Friday is a monthly citywide gallery night that encourages collaboration between non-profit, university, and commercial art venues in Rochester, NY.” On the first Friday of every month, galleries, studios, and other commercial art venues all throughout Rochester open their doors to the public between 6 and 9pm. Local artists at these venues use this as an opportunity to showcase and sell their work, and is a fun outing for those looking for something to do on a Friday night. (And as a bonus, there are usually snacks provided.)

There are plenty of venues throughout Rochester that participate in First Fridays. One personal favorite of mine is the Hungerford Building, located at 1115 E. Main St. I have frequently attended First Fridays at this location and it is always a fun experience. The Hungerford Building contains four floors of studios for various artists and craftspeople who are all very eager to share their work. You can wander from studio to studio enjoying the art, atmosphere, and a few snacks along the way.

The Hungerford has also been known to put on special events. For example, this past Halloween they arranged an event called the “Haunted Hungerford” for First Friday, complete with a costume contest and even a haunted house!

First Fridays at the Hungerford and other Rochester venues are always fun, and definitely something you should do at least once while here at Naz. It’s a great way to experience the art culture here in Rochester. If you are interested in attending, the Naz Art Club frequently arranges trips to the Hungerford for First Fridays. E-mail them at artclub@mail.naz.edu to find out when the next trip is. Otherwise, get a group of friends together and enjoy a night of art, you’ll be happy you did.

The next First Friday will take place on March 5th. For a complete list of venues, click here.
