“Where do you want to go tonight?” He asks.

“I don’t care, you pick,” She responds.

He becomes irritated, she feels unheard. They both feel like they’re talking to someone from another planet: He’s clearly from Mars and she’s clearly from Venus.

The show Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, Live!  was adapted from John Gray’s record breaking bestseller, Men are from Mars Women are from Venus in 2013 by performer Peter Story. The tale of two sexes has been translated into a one-man, off-Broadway show. In March, this hit comedy is coming to Rochester.

In 1992, author John Gray provided the sexes with a how-to book on translating each other’s alien cultures. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus has sold over 50 million copies in the past two decades. While the context for some relationship problems has evolved since the book was originally published, the fundamental communication differences remain the same. Gray explains in the introduction of his book, “[n]ot only do men and women communicate differently but they think, feel, perceive, react, respond, love, need, and appreciate differently.”

Starring in this production of Men are from Mars is Pittsburgh native Amadeo Fusca. The 2013 winner of the Friars Club “So You Think You Can Roast?” competition is using his talents as an actor and comedian to bring Men are from Mars to life. The Friars Club is an esteemed New York City-based private club for entertainment professionals.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, Live! is a part standup comedy, part scripted story that brings the audience through the journey of falling in love—from the honeymoon phase of dating to the grueling work of the marriage years. This is not a show that just appeals to the married demographic, though. Artistic associate at the Downstairs Cabaret Theater, Andy Head, says the show appeals to audience members of all ages and marital statuses. “Anyone who has dated anyone can relate to the show,” he says. “The difficulties of being in a relationship can be looked at in a comedic way and that’s what Men are from Mars is doing.”  While younger audiences may not have read Men are from Mars, there is still a connection to the book; they may know of the book from pop culture references or remember their parents reading it.

The Downstairs Cabaret Theater was founded in 1983 as a not-for-profit professional theater. Its vibe reflects the culture of Rochester—colorful and diverse. “We’re not a company that specializes in something like the classics,” says Head. We try to pick shows that can appeal to a broad base of people. We try to bring in a lot of diverse shows and try to hit interests in different areas.” Aside from guaranteed laughter, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, Live! offers a night away from normal day to day monotony. “Going to the movies and watching Netflix is popular,” Head says. “But there’s a connection in live theater you don’t get with the movies and Netflix,” Head says. “This show is based in the world of standup. Every night is a once in a lifetime show. Each show it its own little entity.”

Men are from Mars will be at the Downstairs Cabaret Theater’s Windsor Street location over the weekend of March 4th. Tickets range from $30 to $33 and the Downstairs Cabaret Theater offers discounts for groups of ten or more people, students and military personnel.
