Can You Handle a Job In College?

Deciding whether you should get a job while in college is a very tough decision for a full-time student. It can be stressful, but also rewarding. It is important to consider all of the pros and cons of having a job while also balancing a full class schedule.

The Cons:

Having a job while in college can be quite stressful. If you have a job while in college, it can become overwhelming trying to pursue your college goals. Working a high number of hours in a week can interfere with the time you have to do homework or study for an exam (especially if you have a job off-campus).

When considering a job, it is important to think about how much you enjoy your free time on the weekends. If you like to go out with your friends on Friday night and sleep in on Saturday, having a job might not be the best for you. A job takes dedication, and being able to show up on time and working to your fullest ability are significant factors. Showing up hungover or tired can be a bad sign to your boss.

The Pros:

I think that we can all agree that making money is a good feeling. Being able to take care of yourself and your expenses show how responsible you are, and that alone is an amazing and rewarding feeling. Not having to depend on your parents all the time is a weight off your shoulders (and theirs).

Students can gain valuable experience through a part-time job. Having hands-on work experience can set you apart from all of the other college students. If you can get a part-time job in the field you are looking to go into after graduation, then you have a foot in the door. Having a job on campus or off campus can help students network through professors or their bosses who can help students find jobs after college.
